Greater Love

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)

Believe it or not, this verse has a daily application. Sure there are people, parents for example, who are willing to die in order to protect their children. That may hopefully never be required of us. But each day we can choose to “lay down” our own desires, maybe even our own needs, for another.

Greater love doesn’t just put something aside when it’s convenient, easy, or during the commercials, but actually love looks for opportunities to express itself. I find this most difficult when that “friend” isn’t really a friend at all—maybe someone I don’t really like, or someone who is an unappreciative taker.

Jesus is our perfect model. He left comfort, riches, and the glorious presence of His Father to teach, heal, serve, and finally die for those who love Him and for those who reject Him.

This truly is the greatest love.
