Much to Do

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray (Mark 1:35).

The words of an old song go something like this, “If you’re too busy for God, Brother, you’re too busy.” What a trick of the deceiver overloading us with demands—work to do, texts and emails to respond to, school commitments, church commitments, sports, friends, exercise, and, oh yes, family. Feed your body, feed your mind, feed your soul. And guilt! if we dare let one of those slip.

In her book, Lies Women Believe, Nancy Leigh DeMoss says that God gives us enough time to do what He has planned for us to do. He’s not going to leave out the important people or things, and He knows that we also need to relax and refresh.

Plugging in my phone is an important and necessary use of time—so, also, is plugging into the Ultimate Source of Power to recharge.

  1. Jesus left His eternal intimacy with the Father so that we can have a chance at intimacy with Him; knowing that we would squander the opportunity. But we see in this passage that He longed for that connection and sought after not out of obligation but out of desire. Early… while it was still dark… He couldn’t wait to get the day started… He couldn’t wait to commune with the Father! Oh to have that passion, that want, that desire, that need for His presence!

  2. This isn’t a verse that sticks in my head, it’s not one of those verses that always pops up in tough situations. Now that I read it though, I realize how much it is a part of my life. I have found that the only time that I can have that intimacy with Him is early in the morning, while it’s still dark and quit, before the days events begin to consume all my time. I realize that putting Him first in all things, especially the first focus of the day, really helps to keep me centered on Him throughout the day no matter how busy I get. Sure I get off track and begin to veer off, but it’s so much easier to come back, to stop myself and say wait a minute, where are you going. Still need to get rid of alot of clutter in my life. I’m A work in progress.
